Is IPTV Booming?
Over the last decade, TV has been declining in popularity and viewership counts especially among the younger demographics who prefers other newer forms of media. Subsequently, the industry stakeholders and network executives began targeting fewer demographics. The segmentation and the variety of content offered by digital media platforms like YouTube made it hard for conventional TV channels to keep up with the rapidly changing demands and ways of entertaining and enlightening viewers. While some may argue that YouTube content is a different new format of media, the closer version is IPTV.
IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) is the delivery of television content over the internet instead of satellites like normal TV channels. Some TV channels already have provided streaming channels either by YouTube live (in case of a free channel), or through an IPTV service provider. Some ISPs already started to offer IPTV services and include cable channels along with the internet subscription. However, is such technology booming in the Middle East or will it be a dying trend in the next few years?
According to the information, numbers, and statistics, IPTV should be more mainstream for homes use in the next few years. Countries like Saudi Arabia are an untapped market for IPTV and streaming media. With at least half of the population uses the internet on daily basis, YouTube is already super popular. Therefore, it will not be an impossible task for IPTV providers marketeers to attract young demographics to subscribe.
The extra features including Live Television and Time-shifted may attract clients who need to find new televised content, also attracting binge watchers for Video on Demand channels. While VOD might not gain popularity because of its similar nature to YouTube and Netflix, there is still a space for local and global competition.
Add to that the diminishing costs of starting an IPTV channel. It costs thousands or even millions to broadcast a channel over Nilesat or Arabsat, starting an IPTV counterpart can slash the bills in half. The rise of IPTV eliminates monopoly, for example, most of the major soccer matches were broadcasted in the Arab world by one network in the last few years. IPTV channels can provide a competition and break monopoly of broadcasting rights.
The segmentation of content provided by YouTube and social media in general changed people’s needs from the media. In the past it was about specialized channels for certain demographics, nowadays that segmentation can mean supporting certain opinion altogether. IPTV channels have the ability to keep up and maintain that audience segmentation, thus have better odds for advertisers to send their messages directly to a layer of guaranteed shoppers/users. As a result, better potential for advertisers’ sales.
In the end, IPTV has a great potential to become popular in the near future given that such technology is gaining momentum recently. Fulfilling the demands and need of a vastly changing market and people’s perception. With channels uniquely made for IPTV, we can see major development in televised media content and changes in media technology.
